Feeling good at 50

It is used to be said “Life begins at 40”. Now, it is said that 50 is the new 40. Women of the post war baby boom generation expect to remain healthy and active throughout their menopausal years.

Interest in hair, make-up, clothes and fashion is shared as much by older as younger women. Caring about appearance, dressing in fashionable, flattering clothes, keeping healthy and active are seen as highly commendable.

No wonder so many women are feeling fabulous at 50. Freed from the restraints of dependent children and the prospect of an end to monthly periods, women feel it is finally their time to enjoy themselves. What is to stop them?

It is true that women’s bodies do change at menopause. Many find they gain weight especially around the waist. The menopause affects the skin, muscles and ligaments making the skin thinner and drier and joints more prone to aches and pains. Bones start to lose their mineral content making them more fragile. Hair also becomes thinner, drier and more brittle. The good news is that much can be done to tackle these changes and prevent health problems.
